Introduction to Amalfi, Italy
Amalfi is a well known tourist destination on the south coast of Italy. Amalfi is a town surrounded by steep cliffs 30kms down the coast from Naples. Many of Amalfi’ s historic buildings are built on cliff sides. As is to be expected from a premium tourist destination there are numerous hotels in Amalfi. Other accommodation in Amalfi town is provided by bed and breakfast establishments. Around the town apartments, villas and farmhouses offer self catering choices. Several Amalfi hotels are also situated slightly to the west of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast. The Piazza Duomo, the focal point of Amalfi, is ringed by magnificent buildings and boasts several outdoor cafs. Narrow lanes lead out from the Piazza and contain small shops, more quaint cafs and a few smaller Amalfi hotels. Saint Andrew’s Cathedral (Duomo) is at the top of a steep staircase behind the Piazza, which contains several historic paintings and statues. Amalfi’s town beach is small and stony but there are more pleasant beaches just outside town.
