Introduction to Alghero - Outskirts
Alghero may be situated on the northwest coast of Sardinia, but this charming community - once known as Little Barcelona - still feels more like a part of Catalonia than a part of Italy, especially since Catalan remains the town's official language. Although the picturesque Old Town here is still among its main attractions, there is also much to explore within Alghero's outskirts. The closest beach is just a leisurely stroll away from the Old Town, but Neptune's Grotto marine caves are also worth the car or boat journey needed to reach them. Just north of Neptune's Grotto lies a largely abandoned mining community called Argentiera. The mine, which was once Sardinia's biggest silver producer, was in operation from the Roman era to 1963, and the surrounding community is reminiscent of an American Wild West ghost town. Other important archaeological sites near the town include the Anghelu Ruju necropolis, next to the airport, and the remains of the Nuraghe di Palmavera palace. Most Alghero hotels in the community's outskirts, like those in the city centre, close altogether during the winter and increase their rates in summer.other spellings: algherohotels, alhero otel, alghero hotell, alghero hote, alhero hotles
