Introduction to Alessandria, Italy
Alessandria, Italy is both the capital and the city with the biggest population in the province of the same name. This city was first founded as a free commune in 1168, as a Lombard League stronghold, and is currently a major rail hub not only for other northern Italian cities such as Turin, Genoa and Milan, but for German and Dutch rail lines as well. All top rated Alessandria hotels are centrally located in this city, which is also known as Lissandria in the local Piedmontese language. The city is located between two rivers, Bormida and Tanaro, in the southeastern-most region of Piedmont. The most famous battle fought in this area was Marengo, when Austrian forces fought Napoleon Bonaparte's French soldiers in 1800. The battle has its own museum here. A natural science museum with a planetarium can also be found here. The 18th century citadel, the 1733 Palazzo Ghilini, and two medieval churches named Santa Maria di Castello and Santa Maria del Carmine are Alessandria's other significant landmarks.
