Attractions in Jerusalem
The Old City is one of the most popular areas and the different quarters highlight the hotpot of cultures and faiths that Jerusalem is famous for. Aside from the religious significance, this modern Mediterranean city has plenty of good cafes, restaurants and bars.
Temple Mount: is important for followers of both Islam and Judaism. A huge Jewish Temple was built on this natural hill during Biblical times and Jews all over the world face Temple Mount when praying, in the same way that that Muslims face Mecca.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre: is the most revered Christian site in Jerusalem. It contains the last five Stations of the Cross of the Via Dolorosa. Inside, you will find the Chapel of Golgotha where Jesus was taken down from the cross, stripped and crucified. At the centre of the church is the Sepulchre, where it is believed that Jesus was buried and resurrected.
Yad Vashem: is one of the most visited museums in Jerusalem. It is a Holocaust memorial that tells the moving story of how almost six million Jews died.
The Mount of Olives: is part of a range of hills surrounding Jerusalem and is significant to Christians and Jews as they believe this is where Jesus ascended to heaven. Also located nearby are the tomb of the Mother Mary and the Garden of Gethsemane. There are some fine views from the top of the Mount of Olives.
The Tower of David: or Citadel looms above the Old City walls and has been important to Jerusalem’s defence for more than two thousand years. The current structure is mostly from the Middle Ages and houses the notable Museum of the History of Jerusalem. The citadel’s main tower, the Phasael, offers some magnificent views across the city.
