Introduction to Tiberias - Old City
Tiberias is perched on the west shores of the Sea of Galilee and is one of Israel's holiest towns. The Old City district has been largely destroyed during catastrophes over the last 200 years, yet enough of its signature black basalt houses and religious edifices remain to give visitors a sense of its history. The district is situated at the edge of a lakeside promenade where boats are moored and it is possible to swim, but the waters can be a bit chilly. Old City hotels and Christian pilgrim hostels are dotted around and near the attractions and eateries, where falafels, fresh fish and pizzas are among the offerings. St Peter's Church, just off the promenade, is a 12th century structure with a mosaic depicting its namesake saint fishing on the lake. Just south of the old quarter are the tomb of revered Jewish rabbi Meir Baal Haness and Hamat Tiberias National Park. The park's 17 hot springs have been renowned since ancient times for their therapeutic qualities. The Tiberias Springs Spa is one of the most visited health facilities in the country and features pools and saunas as well as various body treatments.
