Introduction to Shaar Hagolan, Israel

Although it is a tiny kibbutz in eastern Israel, on the banks of the Yarmuk River and near the Jordan border, Shaar Hagolan has been enticing tourists after the 8,000 year old village was discovered during an archaeological dig. The museum here is a fascinating look at how life once was and as a result of its popularity, hotels in Shaar Hagolan have started to be built. The pre historic Neolithic artefacts show the shift from hunting to agricultural, an important discovery for historians. Shaar Hagolan hotels may be basic and small, but they offer tourists a chance to stay next to the ancient site. With a population of only 504, the kibbutz is short of modern amenities but the locals are welcoming and the views of the river from Shaar Hagolan hotels are very pretty. Being so close to the Jordanian border, visitors can even head to Jordan for a daytrip.
