Introduction to Nimrod, Israel
Not to be confused with the famous ancient city of the same name in modern-day Iraq, Nimrod is a small Israeli settlement in the northernmost Golan Heights, close to the border with Syria. More than 3,600 feet above sea level, the village is built on the side of Mount Hermon, which is fast-developing into a major Israeli ski destination with good snow cover during the winter. In summer, the area makes an excellent destination for walking, given temperatures are cooler here than in the sweltering lower-lying plains further south in the country. The main attraction is Nimrod Fortress, which dates back to medieval times but remains in excellent condition. It is situated on a scenic ridge with great views of the valley below. It was originally built as a watchtower and fortification, preempting one of the Crusades.
