Introduction to Nazareth, Israel
Nazareth is a big city in northern Israel, roughly midway between Haifa on the Mediterranean coast and the fabled Sea of Galilee. Christians believe the city was the boyhood home of Jesus and there are numerous religious shines, such as the hilltop Salesian Church, which draw pilgrims and history aficionados from all over the world. Nazareth hotels are scattered, yet mostly not far from the Old City and attractions such as the Basilica of the Annunciation. This fabulous church is where Angel Gabriel is said to have told the Virgin Mary that she was pregnant. Other interesting sites including Mary's Well, the WWI German Military Cemetery and the former traveller's inn at Khan El-Basha could keep visitors occupied for days. A recently excavated bath house near Mary's Well dates from the Roman-era and is a must-visit site. Streetside stalls in Nazareth are stacked high with unique utensils and souvenirs. Ambient cafes are great places to sit and watch the world pass by while enjoying an Arabic coffee or a tasty falafel sandwich. Visit our Nazareth Travel Guide
