With its history of war, industry and most recently, urban redevelopment, the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Romema is a living testament to Israel's rise as an economic and cultural centre of the Middle East, with a monument to the British soldiers who fell in the battle for Palestine during WWI in Allenby Square, its historic centerpiece. Today Romema remains an affluent district of Israel's largest city, close to the highway from Tel Aviv, and as such, Romema hotels are both diverse and of a generally high standard, with plenty of new additions. It's old Romema that provides the main draw for tourists, however - a legacy to Jerusalem's turbulent past in the form of old houses from the days of the British mandate featuring colourful stonework and tiling that has long gone in other parts of the country.
