Introduction to Jerusalem, Israel
Jerusalem, one of the world's holiest cities, is home to sites revered by Jews, Muslims and Christians. Despite seeing some unrest in the period since Israel gained independence in 1948, incidents are rare and travellers visiting this wonderful city gain a real feeling of following in the footsteps of important figures from history. The Old City quarter is home to around 220 historic buildings and sites. The most important of these are: the Waling Wall, sacred to Jews; the Holy Sepulchre Church on the site of Jesus' crucifixion; and the Dome of the Rock. As well as the sites, a maze of alleys is packed with vendors selling all manner of unique souvenirs and hole-in-the-wall cafes where tasty falafels and freshly-squeezed juices can be enjoyed. There are hostels in the Old City, but few luxury options. Most Jerusalem hotels are located on the west side of the Old City, with several on Keren Hayesod Street. Those staying here are within a few hundred metres of the Old City's Jaffa Gate. Parks including the Gozlan Gardens, home of Jerusalem's iconic windmill, are close to Keren Hayesod.
