Introduction to Jerusalem - Abur Tor
History and heritage pull at the threads of Abur Tor (Abu Tor), a neighbourhood south of Jerusalem's Old City. Jews know it as the Hill of Hinaniya; to Christians, it's the Hill of the Evil Consul; for Muslims, the land was gifted to a great general to help reclaim the city from the Crusaders during 1187. But to a rare mix of Jews and Arabs, this neighbourhood is called home. This is one of the few places in the city where the two opposing groups occupy the same neighbourhood, albeit segregated, directly on the former dividing line between east and west Jerusalem. Abur Tor hotels are found in the Jewish half, where grand boulevards flanked by pink bougainvillea and eucalyptus trees are scarred by mortar shells and bullet holes. The beautiful hilltop parks here provide stunning views of the Dome of the Rock and the Mount of Olives. Many reporters and diplomats reside on this side of town, while the crowded streets of poorly maintained Arab housing shed light on the precarious coexistence found in this monumentally historic city.Visit our Jerusalem Travel Guide
