Built on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, just north of the main tourism centre of Tiberias, Ginosar is a small Israeli town that draws its fair share of visitors, both local and international. Like in most of the towns and villages on the edge of Galilee, the main industry here is tourism despite its origins as an agricultural community. One of the main draws is a famous fishing boat, discovered during a drought in the mid-1980s. The boat dates back to just before the birth of Christ, who is documented as having spent a considerable amount of time in the area. The Sea of Galilee boat, also known as the Jesus boat, is on display at the local kibbutz, members of which were responsible for its excavation in secret after its discovery by two local brothers. Ginosar hotels are mostly located close to the shoreline, with a handful of options including the kibbutz itself.
