Situated within the West Bank, just 21 miles from the border with Jordan, Ariel is an Israeli settlement that has grown steadily since it was founded in 1978. Although not within the West Bank barrier, there are security fences surrounding the town on three sides. Among the highlights for visitors here is the city park, which is one of the best places to go walking with its designated pathways, attractive tree-lined lawns and the Yuval stream which runs through it. There is also a WWII memorial here which serves as a reminder of the critical Middle Eastern campaign. Much of Ariel is residential given that it was formed as a new settlement by Israeli Jews. However, there are a rising number of shops here as well as a university, a sign of the town's increasing status. Ariel hotels are few in number, but those that do exist offer a full range of services for overnight visitors.
