Jakarta, one of Indonesia’s oldest cities, began life as a small harbour port. Sultan Fatahillah defeated the city and named it Jayakarta. When the Dutch gained control they changed the name to Batavia and ruled the island for three centuries. It was the Japanese who changed the name to Jakarta during WWII. With the Japanese withdrawal, Indonesia gained its independence and retained the name Jakarta.
