Festivals & Events

Festivals and Events in Bali
Odalan: a religious festival where a temple’s founding is blessed. The temple is lovingly decorated with flowers, leaves, flags and bamboo towers. In the afternoons or early evenings there are parades with food offerings and prayers made to the deities. The celebrations may continue for as long as one week. Dates are not fixed.
March Festivals

Melasti: is celebrated the day before Nyepi. The villagers deck themselves in their finest clothes and carry umbrellas, offerings of flowers, fruits and sacred statues to the sea or holy springs where the items are washed. Holy men sacrifice pigs accompanied to the sound of drumming by the gamelan and cheering from the villagers. As part of the celebrations, the people are required to be very loud and noisy. The next day, Nyepi, must be maintained in absolute silence.
July/October

Negara Bull Races: are a time for fun and skill to be displayed. The bulls are bathed and lavishly decorated with powdered colour and garlands and then hitched up to chariots. What follows next is the race between the bulls with jockey’s encouraging their bull to the finishing line in a fascinating competition.
Rice Harvest Festival: is celebrated to honour the rice god Dew Sri. Small straw rice gods are made by the villagers and placed in the rice fields and throughout the village. The village itself is thoroughly cleaned, repainted and flags gaily decorate the huts and buildings. It is a happy occasion with lots of laughter, sharing of camaraderie and fun. Villagers will get together to have a communal meal.
December Festivals

New Year’s Eve: is celebrated with fireworks and all night festivities. The celebrations include dinner and dance and the traditional countdown to the New Year.
