Activities in Bali
Eating and drinking: there is no shortage of places to enjoy a meal throughout the island as it caters for the tourist industry. Fine dinning is available in the many five star hotel restaurants that usually have spectacular views of the sea, the hills or paddy fields.
Many seafood restaurants or warungs line the beaches with the speciality being barbequed barracuda. There are also food stall in markets and by the beach offering very cheaply priced food. Night life in Bali is easily available and many pubs and discos open till the wee hours of the morning.
Badung Market is the oldest and largest market in Bali. It is located at Jalan Gajah Mada in Denpasar and sells fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, clothes, textiles, shoes, leather goods and bargaining is mandatory. The best place to buy gold jewellery is in Denpasar while for furniture, head to Kerobokan. Artwork, ceramics and wood carvings are in abundance in Ubud.
Cultural events: Wayang kulit shows, traditional Balinese dancing and music can be enjoyed in Bali. The gamelan orchestra comprising instruments such as gongs, drums, string and wind instruments as well as a vocalist have regular performances in many places throughout the island. Many hotels have dinner and dance performances that combine the traditional dancing and the gamelan music.
Spas: the island of Bali has become a spa retreat with hotels and local establishments offering spa treatments including mud packs, facials, Indonesian massages, reflexology and many other relaxing practises. Prices vary according to the individual spa, but it is safe to assume that saps at hotels are generally the most expensive. In addition to spas, Bali now offers a myriad of holistic treatments including tai chi, meditation, qigong and many other alternative treatments to relax the body, mind and soul.
Courses: the more popular tourist spots in Bali, offer courses in Balinese cooking, dance and batik making. Gamelan lessons are also available and there is no requirement for prior musical knowledge. These can be fun as well as educational. Naturally, the herbs and spices used have been moderated to account for the western taste. Other courses include meditation, tai chi, tarot reading and many more.
