Introduction to Tarakan Island, Indonesia
The Indonesian island of Tarakan used to be most famous for its huge oil refinery, which ranked among the top five biggest East Indies petroleum processing centres. Today, the island and its namesake capital hope to become one of Indonesia's newest tourist destinations. There are already quite a few Tarakan Island hotels on this island, which is roughly one-third as large as Singapore. Just as Singapore was originally a transit point from western Malaysia, so is its East Kalimantan counterpart, situated across from the Malaysian city of Sabah in eastern Borneo. At the moment, the majority of tourists take advantage of the island's visa-free border crossing status to head directly for the nearby Derawan island archipelago. However, Tarakan Island contains a popular beach of its own, called Amal, and memorials dedicated to deceased Japanese and Australian WWII soldiers. other spellings: tarakan isla otel, talakan islan hotell, tarakgan isle hote, tarakan islandhotels
