Introduction to Tabalong, Indonesia

Tabalong forms one of 11 regencies that comprise South Kalimantan, one of the Indonesian provinces on the island of Borneo. Despite this being a relatively remote and rugged part of the world, there are some remarkably comfortable hotels in Tabalong, making it a reasonable destination for visitors keen to see what the area has to offer or those en route to the interior of Kalimantan. Coal mining, forestry and farming are big industries in this area, with clear-cut farming generating annual haze problems. As long as visitors avoid the burning season, this should not been an issue. Diamond mining is also big business here and a tour of the Cempaka fields just off the Banjamarsin-Martapura road makes for a highly unusual holiday activity. Getting around the region generally involves slow progress on the roads. The safest and quickest way in and out is by plane via Warakun Airport. Ferries across the Java Sea can be caught on the coast, a few hours by road to the south.
