Introduction to Sumbawa, Indonesia

Long held as a killer secret surf spot, the Indonesian island of Sumbawa has plenty more for intrepid travellers in search of sparkling beaches and tropical adventure. Nearly everyone who makes the long journey to this somewhat remote island east of Bali and Lombok has their surfboard in tow. Spectacular uncrowded breaks like Supersucks, Yoyo and Scar Reef provide a truly memorable surfing experience but scampering around the mighty Tambora Volcano is an even more uncharted adventure. Sumbawa is a beautiful island and its near total lack of development makes it the perfect place to drop out and unwind. The magical (and luxurious) Aman resort within Moyo National Marine Park is easily the best of the Sumbawa hotels, just steps from world-class scuba diving and snorkelling. The 15-hour boat odyssey from Bali drops passengers off in Port Tano while a puddle hopper from Denpasar into the main city of Besa Sumbawa offers much quicker air access. Either way, this is an island destination well worth taking the time to get to.
