Introduction to Salatiga, Indonesia
Though it sits just 100kms to the north of Yogyakarta, the Indonesian town of Salatiga can take three hours to reach by road. The town sits at the top of a ridge of volcanic mountains that attract many sightseers and hikers. The closest of these is Mount Telomoyo. Hotels in Salatiga offer excellent bases for visiting this and other area attractions. Rawa Pening, a stunning lake offering the chance to enjoy fantastic sunsets, is less than 30 minutes by car to the northwest via the Boyolali-Semarang road. The region's biggest university - Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) - is located in the town. Not only does it have a student body of more than 14,000, but it offers homestay language courses of anything from two weeks to six weeks in duration. Transport in and out of the town is by road, with buses and minivans available to get to other communities in the region.
