Introduction to Rantepao - Outskirts
Set amid a pristine tropical jungle and stunning mountain scenery, Rantepao is a small town in the heart of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The town is home to the Torajan people, an ethnic group native to the area and whose cultural practices and animist beliefs are still thriving. On the outskirts of the town are villages where visitors can witness village life and meet the Torajan people, and even visit their massive huge traditional houses known as Tongkonan. Another great way to get to know the culture is by taking a jungle trek from the outskirts, where it is possible to visit villages and see spectacular scenery and stunning views of the mountains. Visitors are able to watch a traditional burial ritual on the outskirts of Rantepao at special burial sites carved into cliffs. These are very lavish affairs with feasting, music and even the slaughter of a buffalo. At these events, the Torajan people perform a dance which expresses their grief and celebrates the life of the person being mourned. Two kilometres from the centre of town, visitors will find the Pasar Bolu, which is the town's main market. There are many different kinds of local produce on sale here as well as a big bustling cattle market. Getting to Rantepao is easy as it has a domestic airport with three flights a week from Makassar, the capital of Sulawesi. Furthermore, there is a bus service running to Makassar that takes nine hours. There are plenty of Rantepao hotels in the town which will appeal to all budgets.other spellings: rantepaohotels, rantepoa otel, rantepoa hotell, rantapao hote, hotles in rantapao
