Introduction to Purwokerto, Indonesia
The tranquil town of Purwokerto is situated in the middle of Indonesia, between the far more populated cities of Yogyakarta and Jakarta. Purwokerto hotels are ideal places to unwind for visitors trekking between the two larger cities, and a campsite can be found north of the town. Central Java's highest volcano, Mount Slamet, towers over Purwokerto, which the Kranji River splits in half. Six banyan trees grow in the central public square, which locals call alun-alun and where they spend much of their spare time. Street vendors sell local snacks and toys for children in the square. A local bank called Jalan contains a museum dedicated to Indonesian banking pioneer RA Wiriatmaja. However, most tourists come here to soak in the Pancuran Pitu and Pancuran Telu natural hot springs, both situated 15kms north in Baturaden, where trails for hiking and a playground for children can also be found. May to September is this region's driest and most ideal visiting time.
