Introduction to Pontianak - City Centre
The Indonesian industrial city of Pontianak lies in Borneo's West Kalimantan province on the Kapuas River delta and has the distinction of being set exactly on the equator. Formerly a trading town and known for its gold mines, the town and most of its buildings are constructed on piles set into the swampy ground to protect them from the regular floods. Shipbuilding and the production of rubber, palm oil, tobacco, sugar and spice account for most of its economy and employ most of its half a million inhabitants. Pontianak is not known as a tourist destination as the river is contaminated with mercury from the gold mining operations and all the surrounding forests have been cleared to a 200km radius. The town is unattractive although the central area has a few good Pontianak City Centre hotels mainly aimed at business travellers and overnighters, but with clean and comfortable rooms at good prices. The Muslim quarter has a few picturesque cafes, although alcohol is not served.other spellings: CityCentre hotls, hotel in CityCentre
