Introduction to Pekanbaru - City Centre
More a traveller transit point than a tourist destination, Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau Province in Sumatra. Those travelling overland from Singapore to Bukittinggi will almost certainly pass through this city, which has a reputation as one of the cleanest in Indonesia. There are a handful of cultural attractions here worth seeing, such as the Great Mosque of An-Nur, the Riau Cultural Park and the Sang Nila Utama Museum. Pekanbaru also has some pleasant natural sites in the city centre, including the Princess Kaca Mayang Garden and the Alam Mayang Fishing Garden. Visitors will find the usual array of Indonesian restaurants and bars in the downtown area, along with several modern shopping complexes and a few traditional outdoor markets. Head down to the riverside for some of the most authentic little food stalls and cafes.
