Introduction to Papua, Indonesia
Papua is the eastern most province of the Indonesian archipelago, situated immediately to the west of Papua New Guinea. The region is also known as Irian Jaya or Western New Guinea, and is currently regarded as the highest tropical climatic zone in the world. It is largely undeveloped, and contains some of the world’s final bastions of untouched land. Hotels in Papua are not overly classy. In fact, some Papua hotels are very basic. However, this largely depends on where travellers are visiting. Some of the larger cities, including Jayapura and Wamena, boast some of the most elegant and costly hotels in Papua. If travelling around the province, it is almost impossible to do so using a car as many of the cities are not connected due to the mountainous terrain. However, it is possible to fly from one city to another in a light aircraft. Boat travel is not recommended as it can be more expensive that flying.
