Nowadays, people of all nationalities and walks of life have discovered this tranquil island refuge off the northern coast of the much bigger island of Sumbawa, in the centre of southern Indonesia. This island formerly spelled Mojo, a name still used by some people, is just 30kms long and no more than 20kms wide at one point. There are no Moyo Island hotels other than one famous luxury resort, but daytrips are still popular among those with small funds. Moyo Island Hunting Park occupies two-thirds of the island, while a marine park can be found on the island's south coast. Walking along the fine coral sand of the island's beaches and exploring the unique coral reefs around the island are the main attractions here, but visitors must bring their own snorkelling and scuba diving equipment as none is provided on Moyo Island. Batu Tering traditional village is the best place to learn more about the megalithic culture which once dominated this sparsely populated island.
