Introduction to Mataram, Indonesia

Several small communities eventually merged together to become the city of Mataram, Indonesia. No city on Lombok Island has a greater population or larger size than West Nusa Tenggara's capital, and Mataram hotels are good bases for Lombok Island visitors. Visitors may explore this city aboard a horse and buggy or by more modern forms of transportation. Among the city's modern attractions is Mataram Mall, bigger than any other shopping centre in both the city and the rest of Lombok. Traditional street vendors and food stalls can be found on the city's two main strips. Jalan Pejanggik comes alive each night, while Jalan Udayana is liveliest on weekends. The most impressive museum here is called Negeri Nusa Tenggara Barat and is dedicated to Lombok's history. In 1894, Balinese and Dutch forces experienced many fierce battles between each other at the presently peaceful Taman Mayura water palace, constructed 150 years before the battles.
