Manokawri first became West New Guinea's capital during the Dutch colonisation era. This Indonesian city has been the capital of the country's West Papua Province since 2003. This part of the country may still be relatively unknown to most tourists, but there are still a handful of Manokwari hotels open to anyone who decides to venture to this picturesque and predominantly Christian city overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can find virtually any type of fruit imaginable in this 'Fruit City', but most local attractions lie outside the city limits. Manokwari's most popular attractions of all may be the walking trails and stunning city views in Gunung Meja Park. The wide and tranquil Amban Beach is especially popular with surfers, but Anggi Lake is another quiet body of water where visitors can relax and soak in spectacular scenery. Although Arfac Reserve is just a short distance away, the longer trek to Cenderawasih Bay Marine National Park is worth the extra distance. This national park, known for its fascinating variety of coral and fish species, is considered among the most beautiful places in all of Papua.
