Resting 40 minutes by boat from North Sulawesi’s shore, Manado Bunaken Park is one of the best known dive sites in Indonesia. Due to its prestigious diving reputation, tourism here is well developed to cater to the 10,000 or so visitors that arrive each year. Most Manado hotels in the park are situated on Bunaken Island, with a couple of options on Siladen Island. Diving courses are big business here, with discovering the colourful marine life the main attraction of a visit. Yet those with no diving experience can easily get a taster of the underwater life through snorkelling or even beachcombing as parts of the reef top are visible at low tide. Boat trips to see whales and dolphins are offered in season, as are fishing trips (to locations outside the park) year round. Landlubbers may prefer to hike between east and coast coves, where secluded stretches of sand can be enjoyed.
