Introduction to Magelang - City Centre

Magelang is a large city in the Indonesian regency of the same name, set in central Java on the Kedu Plain between Mount Sumbing and Mount Merbabu. The small city lies in an agricultural belt and is divided into three districts, each containing sub-districts, with Mageland Tenga its central area. Traditionally a military town, the city holds the National Military Academy and a military-associated school. The town square, Alun-Alun, is the heart of the city, home to its shopping and entertainment district, a cinema, a Confucian temple and a large mosque. Close by are a number of Magelang City Centre hotels. A few steps from the town square is Jalen Pemuda street, the town's Pecinan, or Chinatown, with its shops, minimarkets and Chinese temples and on the edge of the central area lies Kyai Langgeng Park, well known for its research and conservation of rare flora. The only way to access the city is by road as the railway has been closed down and there is no airport.
