Introduction to Lampung, Indonesia
At the extreme southern tip of Indonesia’s island of Sumatra is the region of Lampung, a land of extreme volcanic activity and exquisite coastal scenery. Few tourists know about this area, so its national parks and beaches are pleasantly devoid of crowds and tourist hype. Throughout its history, Lampung has been known for its skill with textile production. Its marvelous tapi fabric often uses real gold threads interwoven in it. As such, the towns in this region are ideal for buying handmade textiles at bargain prices. The capital of the region is Bandar Lampung, made up of twin cities called Tanjung Karang and Teluk Betung. Most traveller amenities can be found in this urban hub, including the largest concentration of restaurants, hotels and shops. Many excellent Lampung hotels are also located on the beaches, which is the main attraction for most tourists.
