Introduction to Jakarta - Senayan
Senen is a historic sub-district in Jakarta, in Java, Indonesia. The area is home to the fascinating Museum of Indonesian National Awakening, which was Indonesia's first medical school. In 1908, medical students met here to establish the first political organisation as part of Indonesia's liberation from Dutch rule. The museum celebrates this movement and has exhibits which document the country's period of change along with medical equipment used at the school. Not far from Senen is Jakarta's Mederka Square, which is surrounded by historical government buildings. Inside the square visitors will find the Monas, or National Monument. This monument was once the tallest structure in Indonesia. There is also a park at the square with large trees, ponds and fountains.
