Introduction to Jakarta - Pancoran
Pancoran is one of the 10 sub-districts of South Jakarta, one of five separate administrative cities which form the much larger city of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital and most populated cities. Pancoran and South Jakarta in general are ranked among the most affluent parts of Jakarta, and much of the city's nightlife, sporting activities, upscale shopping centres, and best places to eat are found here. Not surprisingly, most Pancoran hotels are also modern high rise accommodation options with ratings of no fewer than three stars. Pancoran may be the city's largest Chinatown, but its most famous landmark actually pays tribute to the Japanese soldiers who fought alongside their Indonesian counterparts when the country sought independence from the Dutch following WWII. A total of 7,000 people, 1,000 of them Japanese, are buried at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery, which has been visited by members of the Japanese royal family. The other major landmark is the Dirgantara Statue, which has overlooked the neighbourhood since 1965 and is also known as the Father of the Heavens Monument.Visit our Jakarta Travel Guide
