Introduction to Jakarta - Bekasi
The Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, despite the often oppressive heat, stifling pollution, endless urban sprawl, is a charming, colourful and attractive destination for travellers who don't mind leaving the lap of tropical luxury. The city offers a heady mix of the various tribal cultures from across the Indonesian archipelago, waves of immigrants - most noticeably Chinese - and more recent foreign arrivals from the West. Many of the people working in the city arrive from commuter areas like Bekasi. Hotels in Bekasi offer a good location for visitors who want to avoid the urban crush of the city centre while still enjoying plenty of modern amenities. Halim Perdanakusuma Airport is less than 30 minutes away, though it only really supports VIP, military flights and charters. Getting to the main international airport involves a good 45-minute trip across the city that can take much longer in heavy traffic. Road links are good, however, with the Jalan Tolway to Cikampek and the main ring road just minutes away.
