The stunning Thousand Islands region of Indonesia, known as Kepulauan Seribu, is an archipelago of some 105 islands spread across 45 kilometres of the Java Sea and offering some of the most breathtaking natural scenery on the planet. Getting to some of the hottest destinations here involves a boat trip, but hotels on Ayer Island can be reached in less than an hour from the Ancol Marina in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. With good weather, the trip can take as little as 30 minutes, depositing visitors at one of the most popular resort destinations within reach of the city. Despite the island's popularity, this is a relatively peaceful place to enjoy a tropical seaside holiday. The surrounding seas offer no end of excellent swimming, boating, yachting, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, water skiing and more. Rich, tropical forest and stunning blue-green seas abound here, which is little surprise as the entire region falls within the Taman Nasional Kepulauan Seribu National Park.
