Introduction to Jakarta - Ancol
The Indonesian resort town of Ankol lies in northern Java, just south of Jakarta Bay and east of Sunda Kelapa harbour. Known as Taman Impian Jaya Ankol, it's the largest dedicated tourism area in the whole of Southeast Asia. The formerly swampy ground was developed into a major centre for tourism in 1968 and now includes Dunia Fantasia theme park and 552 hectares of recreational park containing Ancol hotels, resorts, cottages, markets, a marina, a golf course and much more. The two palm tree-lined beaches, Festival and Carnival, are the main attraction here, mainly narrow, crowded in high season and with areas set aside for rock concerts and other regular events. Back from the sands are an art market, a bowling alley and Ocean Dream, featuring a small aquarium and dolphin and sea lion shows, with construction of an eco-park due to start in 2011. The largest of Southeast Asia's oceanariums, Sea World, is located here, with its popular viewing tunnel and shark, alligator and sea friends pools.Visit our Jakarta Travel Guide
