Introduction to Batam Island - Beach
Located just 25kms from the Malaysian city of Johor and 20kms from Singapore, Batam Island in western Indonesia has nearly one million residents and an even greater number of annual visitors. Only Bali, located at the opposite end of Indonesia's island archipelago, receives more tourists than Batam Island, many of whom arrive by ferry from Singapore for brief day trips. However, plenty of Batam Island Beach hotels are also available for anyone wishing to spend one or more nights here. Although most accommodation is found in its largest city, Nagoya, at the island's southernmost tip, Batam Island's north coast is the home of most of its beautiful beaches. Naughty nightlife was once the island's main attraction, but its casinos and prostitutes have been replaced with the more family friendly activities Ocarina Park and the Waterfront City area have to offer. Batam Island is also home to over half a dozen high quality golf courses as well as the ancient temples of Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya and Vihara Buddhi Bakti. The six Barelang swing bridges connect the island to the other islands of Galang and Rempang.
