Introduction to Banyuwangi - Kalibaru
Kalibaru is a sub-district on the peninsular Regency of Banyuwangi, set at the southernmost point of the Indonesian island of Java and containing the main ferry port for Bali, just across the strait. Set in a region of mountains and dense forests, the area is rich in culture and home to a number of ethnic groups. Kalibaru can be approached by train from Banyuwangi main station, a journey of just under two hours. The village itself holds remnants of its Dutch colonial history and is surrounded by both breathtaking wildernesses and cultivated cacao and coffee plantations. The town is well placed as a stop-over point on the tourist trail from Jakarta to the Banyuwangi ferry to Bali, but it's worth spending a couple of nights in one of the Kalibaru hotels to explore this unspoilt area. Hiking and trekking are popular activities around the area, and adventure tourism is just beginning to take hold. Homestays are also available and the local market is the place for souvenirs and handicrafts. Visitors should remember to get cash in advance for their stay as there are no ATMs or banks in the little town.
