Introduction to Banjarmasin, Indonesia
During the turn of the 20th century, no city on the island of Borneo had a bigger population than Banjarmasin, which now serves as the capital of the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan in southeast Borneo. There are at least six Banjarmasin hotels in addition to growing numbers of homestays. Many residents build their homes on stilts or rafts because the city's intricate waterway network is very prone to flooding. Banjarmasin earned its nickname as the 'River City' because of its location where the Martapura and Barito rivers meet, and boats remain the main means of transportation for many residents. The city's most famous attraction remains its Pasar Lima floating marketplace where sellers and buyers conduct their transactions inside boats. This predominantly Muslim city is home to both the 300-year-old Masjid Sultan Suriansyah mosque, South Kalimantan's oldest, and the far newer Masjid Raya Sabilal Muhtadin mosque, which became Indonesia's second biggest after its 1981 completion.other spellings: banjamasin otel, benjarmasin hotell, binjarmasin hote, banjamasin hotes
