Introduction to Bangka Island, Indonesia
Only a few decades ago, the Indonesian island of Bangka, directly east of Sumatra, was most famous for its tin production. In fact, even the island's name, whose alternative spellings include Banca or Banka, is derived from the local word for 'tin', which was first seen on an inscription dated in the year 686 AD. Although visitors can still learn more about Bangka Island's top quality tin at the Pangkalpinang Tin Museum in the island's capital and biggest city, natural beauty and unspoilt beaches have become the island's most popular attractions. Most Bangka Island hotels are now situated near the shores of several of these beaches, whose clear waters of turquoise blue provide excellent quality snorkelling and diving conditions. Bangka Island's beaches are ranked among the most beautiful and tranquil in all of Southeast Asia. The island's most recommended attractions beyond its beaches are Tirta Tapta natural hot springs, Belinyu's Chinese ethnic village called Kampung Gedong, Baturusa Bridge, several pewter handcraft workshops, and the Dutch colonial buildings which still stand in the island's communities.
