Introduction to Balikpapan - City Centre
Balikpapan is an Indonesian seaport located on the eastern coast of Borneo, containing two harbours, an airport and a population of almost half a million people. Developed 100 years ago during the early days of the world oil boom by a Dutch drilling company, its massive refinery lies on the coast at Balikpapan Bay and produces kerosene, gasoline, diesel and paraffin wax. The centre of the smallish, clean city is home to the headquarters of a number of major international oil companies, with Balikpapan City Centre hotels providing a home from home for business travellers within the sector. The centre of the city is home to a huge shopping mall as well as several markets, with one, the traditional Kebun Sayur, specialising in the other famous product of Borneo, precious gems, including diamonds and specially made jewellery with an exotic touch to the designs.
