The Indonesian city of Balikpapan, which sits at the southern end of East Kalimantan, is in an area of lush tropical nature and beautiful beaches, despite the fact that it is largely dominated, both physically and in terms of atmosphere, by the rather garish glass, metal and concrete wrought by the oil industry's injection of commerce. Many visitors in the city are involved in business, particularly the petroleum sector, and they will tend to spend their time in the air-conditioned splendour of pricey hotels and shopping malls. The hotels at Balikpapan Beach, however, will probably be much more attractive for most tourists, given their proximity to the beautiful coast. The top beaches include Lamaru Beach and Manggar Beach. Dapur Bunda is a bit farther away, but it offers great sunsets. Active and ecological pursuits are popular with many tourists. The crocodile farm is a particular hit and the local orangutan sanctuary, about one hour away, offers both an educational experience and the chance to spend anything from a few nights to several weeks far away from the pressures of the modern world.
