Introduction to Bali - Uluwatu Beach
Best known for its cliff-hanging temple, Uluwatu in southern Bali is off the island's beaten tourist track. The 11th century temple is a highlight of any visit here, but the Bukit Peninsula on which it is situated is fast gaining notoriety for its world-class surf spots and idyllic beaches. Balangan is one of the best sandy stretches within easy reach of Uluwatu. Staying at Uluwatu hotels along the coast is a more appealing option than staying in the inland towns of Ungasan and Pecatu, the peninsula's main towns. Alternatively, the community can be reached on a daytrip from the island's main resort of Kuta, just a 30-minute taxi ride north. Uluwatu Temple has a stunning location looking out across the Indian Ocean, with sunset a fantastic time to visit. Visitors must dress respectfully in order to enter the temple, where caution around the local monkeys needs to be exercised by those with cameras, sunglasses and the like. A nearby cave makes for a nice side trip to the temple.Visit our Bali Travel Guide
