- Introduction to Bali - Sanur
During World War II, the Japanese took control of the island. The Dutch believed that they would continue to govern the islands when the Japanese withdrew at the end of the war, but the Parti Nasional Indonesia (PNI) had been mobilising people and were ready to fight for an independent Indonesia. Faced with either another war or withdrawing, the Dutch chose to withdraw and left independent Indonesia in the hands of Parti Nasional Indonesia led by Sukarno.
