Introduction to Ambon, Indonesia
Maluku's provincial capital of Ambon creeps up the side of a volcano, overlooking a pretty bay that is home to a busy port. This Indonesian city on the island of the same name offers visitors a wealth of historical sights including Dutch East Indies Company fort remains and other leftovers from the port's heyday as a colonial trading and transport hub for nutmeg, cloves and mace. There are three beaches here with snorkelling and other water sports: Namalatu Beach, Liang Beach and Natsepa Beach. Other draws include the compact Siwa Lima Museum, covering local arts and crafts, and the graves of Allied soldiers who lost their lives here during WWII. There are a number of hotels in Ambon catering to visitors passing through, while local eateries serve up the ubiquitous nasi kuning, or spicy yellow fried rice. The island's airport offers frequent flights to Jakarta, while boats run to the port from several major Indonesian destinations.
