Images of the Sumatran capital city of Bandar Aceh were seared into human memory in 2004, when a Tsunami erased much of the city from the surface of the planet, but steadily rebuilding, there is plenty to offer tourists here again. If there was one positive outcome of this horror, it was that the long-running conflict between the local independence movement and the government soon reached a peaceful turn. Since then the Indonesian province of Aceh has enjoyed a much-needed period of peace while rebuilding efforts continue. Visitors can now freely enter the area, and hotels in Bandar Aceh support an increasing number of tourists, in addition to NGOs and other groups helping locals to rebuild their lives. One of the most impressive attractions is the Grand Mosque, which was built in the 12th century. The Cut Nya Dien House, a replica, honours a female revolutionary from the region. A rather unfortunate but interesting tour takes visitors around several boats that were carried inland by the huge wave. Fans of culture and history should also visit the Aceh Museum.
