By air: Mumbai is the main international gateway to South India. The international airport Chhatrapati Shivaji, known as Sahar, is located four kilometres from the domestic airport, which is also called Chhatrapati Shivaji, but known as Santa Cruz. The two are connected by a free shuttle bus. Domestic flights by Air India depart from the international airport.
By train: Mumbai is well served by an extensive railway network, operating local and national routes. There are two major companies, Western Railway and Central Railway.
By bus: several private operators and state governments run long-distance buses to and from Mumbai. Private operators generally have faster and more comfortable services and easier booking procedures. Private long-distance buses to all destinations depart from Dr Anadrao Nair road, near Mumbai Central train station.
Tickets can be bought directly from agents with pavement stalls near the station. It is not recommended to travel on the state-run buses, as these are often decrepit, crowded and uncomfortable.
