In fact, Delhi is a combination of eight cities that began around 900 BC and ended with the inauguration of its eighth city as the capital.
The first mention of Delhi, as it is currently known, was in the Mahabharat, an ancient Indian epic, which mentioned that in the 11th century, Raja Anangpal of Kanauj founded Lal Kot as his capital city within the area of the Qutab Minar. This was to be known as the first city of Delhi.
The next few centuries saw more and more cities emerging. The Tughlaks founded the third and fourth cities between 1320 and 1413; the fifth city was named Ferozabad and was founded by Firoz Shah Tughlag and Purina Qila was founded by the Mughal Emperor.
Old Delhi, as it is now known, was built by Emperor Shah Jahan and was Delhi’s seventh city. The city comprised of the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and contains many fine examples of Mughal architecture. The city also comprised of Delhi’s eighth city, now known as New Delhi.
This city is now the capital of India and though overcrowded, it maintains its stateliness and magnificence and continues to gain in popularity.
