Introduction to Thalassery, India
None of India's British settlements have a longer history than Thalassery, situated in the northern part of the nation's southwesternmost state, Kerala. The British first came to this city in 1682 to establish spice trading facilities, and many visitors still call the city by its English name, Tellicherry. Most Thalassery hotels are inexpensive budget or mid-range establishments, but local family homestays have also become popular. This city is filled with religious buildings, from the English Church and its adjacent Catholic Rosary Church to the nearly 1,000-year-old Juma Masjid Mosque to Hindu and Buddhist temples. The British first constructed the carved doors, impressive walls, and hidden tunnels to the Arabian Sea within Thalassery Fort, now a historic monument, in 1708. Perhaps the city's most unusual landmark is Overbury's Folly, a planned picnic spot which its British creator was unable to complete during the 1870s. More than a century later, Overbury's Folly has transformed into a relaxing tourist attraction with its own seaside outdoor cafe.
