Introduction to Tamil Nadu - Madurai
The cultural capital of Tamil Nadu State is Madurai, known as India's 'Temple Town', is located along the banks of the River Vaigai and was founded over 2,000 years ago. Known also as the 'sleepless city' as the coffee and tea shops here never close, the town comes with a temple on nearly every street. The most famous of all is Meenakshi Amman temple, the heart of the city, with its glorious sculptures and intricately painted ceilings. Million of pilgrims flood the city during April/May, filling Madurai hotels to the brim for the festivities traditionally held in the Hindu Chithrai month. The celebrations include street processions of the image of the goddess Meenakshi Amman, her celestial wedding to Lord Sundareswarar, chariot processions and a magnificent parade of decorated floats on the final day. The nightly sound and light show at the ancient Thirumalai Nayak Palace is yet another 'don't miss' event, and the on-site museum displays 17th century stone carvings and images of the hundreds of Hindu gods.other spellings: medurai otel, maduri hotell, maduray hote, maddurai hotles, maturai hotle, madori
